Phillip Phillips Discusses Releasing New Music

It’s been exactly five years since Georgia native Phillip Phillips won the 11th season of American Idol.  May 23rd, 2012 he was officially crowd the winner and  5 short months later he released his highly anticipated album The World from the Side of the Moon which had the hit song ‘Home’ on it. In 2014 he released his sophomore album Behind the Light which had the successful song ‘Raging Fire’ as the lead off single. Phillips is currently working on his third album and has an extensive tour across North America this summer. Sportainment caught up with Phillips about the pressure of releasing music:

Did you feel a lot of pressure or do you still feel pressure to release song given that you had such successful songs right out of the gate?

Phillip Phillps (PP): Oh yeah! It is terrifying. I was so nervous when ‘Raging fire’ was released following ‘Home’ but I was really proud of it. It all happened so fast and you just hope that people like it.I really like it and that’s what matters but you hope people like it too.

You also switched your sound just a bit from your first to second release. It had a bit more of a ‘rock’ feel to it. Was that intentional?

PP: Definitely. It had more of a rock feel because that’s really what I play is rock and folk and I think my song ‘Raging Fire’ really represents that. It’s not folkie at all and has a heaviness to it. Some songs will always be darker than others lyrically and musically.

You’ve performed on TV in front of millions of people, after that one would assume you wouldn’t get nervous anymore?

PP: Oh no, I get nervous. I get terrified! Because it is a new show every time and I don’t want to screw up and so it’s always terrifying for me

You have dozens of shows this summer, what do you hope fans take away from your show?

PP: I want them to have a good time. I want to see them singing and grooving and having a good time. We are going to rock out hard.

Your job seems stressful at times, you are always on the road. What do you do for fun?

PP: Oh man, I don’t know what I do for fun. I don’t do anything for fun, I am not really an interesting guy.

Can you ‘Phil’ in the blank for us?

PP: {laughs} I’ll try!

I love __ more than anything in the world

PP: Food!

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?

PP: Chicken. Anu king of chicken!

Who would you want to play you in a movie?

PP: Leo Dicaprio. To me, he is one of my favorite actors of all time.

I secretly love listening to__?

PP: Katy Perry. But I tell people that!
