New Music Friday: The Sheepdogs

The Sheepdogs will soon return with a new album called Changing Colours, set for release February 2nd, 2018. The album comes just over two years since their masterpiece Future Nostalgia.

They just released their lead single “I’ve Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be”, where once again the group proves their musical genius with lyrics and music that make you want more. As for the song, there wasn’t an epic romantic battle behind it’s meaning.

“I think I wrote it a couple years ago in a little shack in Toronto,” Frontman Ewan Currie said, “It’s not particularly romantic but I was just sitting there writing music. The meaning of the song can be taken two ways. 1) You’re looking for love and you don’t have it or 2) maybe you don’t have the capacity for caring or love and you’re a bit of a psychopath.”

Psychopath: a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behaviour.

That is definitely not a term anyone would describe the humble rockers from Western Canada. They have played all over the world to hundreds of thousands of adoring fans and are multiple Juno Award Winners. Historically when artists get anywhere even close to the success the group have gotten they tend to succumb to pressure. It seems like the band has the key to avoiding previous groups mistakes.

“I wouldn’t say we are completely unfettered when it comes to making music. We don’t completely just give into whatever we want to do we out fans want because that is important to us. We see what songs people react to when we play live and see that they are into. So I think there is a bit of both. We service ourselves but we also seek to give the people kind of what they want. There are some indulgences on the album some weird journeys but also some straight up rock n’ roll which is what I think most people expect.”

Each member brings their own unique style and charm to the bands persona and have arguably the best fashion sense in the music industry. It seems the group can do no wrong. They have three albums which cracked the top 15 in Canada and their new single is being played all over the country.

“Even though we think we know what we are doing, we really don’t. It’s always changing and it’s important to remember that making music is not really a science. It’s part science part art so you kind of have to let it flow. We would try to come in and work everyday but if it wasn’t working we wouldn’t force it.

The single I’ve Got a Hole Where My Heart Should Be is out now. Changing Colour is set for release Feb. 2.
