Soulful vocalist and songwriter Ellen Doty announces the release of her long awaited sophomore album “Come Fall” out February 2018. Today, Ellen shares the first single to be taken from the album, “September Moon”.
“September Moon” reflects on the changing of seasons, and reminders of days gone by. As summer fades, and “distractions fall away”, those once familiar feelings and memories seem to come flooding back. With the unique sounds of solely piano and drums beneath her, Doty’s voice will leave you breathless in this hauntingly beautiful tune.
“Come Fall” seeks to strip the music down to its bare bones, leaving a raw and incredibly spacious sound. No bass. No background vocals. No horns. No layers. Just piano, voice, and drums. A mixture of pop, jazz, soul, folk, and indie music, the sound is one that is undoubtedly hers. The album was recorded at Sumbler House near Toronto with drummer Davide Di Renzo (Cassandra Wilson, Tom Cochrane, Molly Johnson, etc.) and pianist Mark Lalama (Kevin Breit, Sisters Euclid, Daniel Romano, etc.). It was engineered by Juno-award winning engineer John “Beetle” Bailey, and features co-writes with many notable writers including Justin Rutledge, Andy Stochansky, Danny Vacon (The Dudes), and more.
CBC Music recently named Ellen one of the Top Canadian Jazz Musicians under 35: “With an honesty and warmth that sets her apart from so many artists, Doty is an emerging Canadian talent who is clearly one to watch for 2017 and beyond.” Doty’s first album “Gold”, a more traditional sounding pop-jazz album, was released in 2014. It reached the top 10 on several college radio charts in Canada, and she followed up the release with a crowd-funded, self-booked, 42 stop Canadian tour. In the past year, she had the chance to open for two-time Grammy-winner Gregory Porter, and recently completed a Western Canada concert theatre tour with award-winning saxophonist Eli Bennett from Vancouver.
“September Moon” will be released independently via Spotify, Apple Music, Itunes, and all other digital streaming sites. Doty will be performing for this year’s Breakout West Festival in Edmonton on September 15 th and 16 th, and her album release in Calgary will take place at The Bella Concert Hall on Saturday March 3rd, 2018 followed by an extensive Canadian tour (dates coming soon).
