NBA Legend Says Lowry Should Stay In Toronto

“This is a good place for him to be. I don’t think he should shop and try to find another home.” Those were the words spoken by NBA Hall of Famer Julius ‘Dr. J’ Erving. The 4-time MVP was in Toronto to participate in Blue Jays Legend Joe Carters Golf Tournament.

Erving, whose face and voice were heard during almost every commercial break during the NBA Finals for a spot that told you straight up that a player is always judged on if they won a ring or not. Something Kyle Lowry brought up in his exit interview when asked about his free agent priorities. “A ring. Nothing else. I just want a ring. I think I can do that anywhere I play. That’s just how confident I am,” Lowry said. “I’ve got to get better and I want to beat the best. Whatever it takes to beat the best, that’s what I’ve got to do.”

Erving won three championships, 2 with the ABA and then one with the NBA. He knows what it takes to win. “I think DeRozan is as good as it gets at his position and Lowry is one of the better guards in the league, he is an All-Star and a clutch player. They need to lock him in, those two play well together and they need to build around those two.”

‘Dr.J’ was the dominate player of his era and an innovator who changed the way the game was played. As he sees it, Toronto’s backcourt doesn’t need changing.  “I like that combo. They just need to focus on coaching, getting the other pieces and competing. I mean they were close a year and a half ago. You don’t give up on that formula, it’s not all over when you have a team as successful as they are.”

Lowry will enter free agency for the third time in his career this summer. Earlier in the week there was a report that Lowry was not happy with the Raptors, however Lowry went to twitter to shut down the rumour mill.

Raptors President Masai Ujiri also said he believes Lowry wants to stay in Toronto during his pre-draft media availability.

While Erving believes Lowry should and will stay in Toronto there was one thing he wanted to add with immense pride and a huge smile on his face.” Don’t forget, he’s a Philadelphia kid by the way.”
