The Toronto Maple Leafs had a pre-game ceremony on Saturday night that celebrated the franchises centennial anniversary. During the ceremony it was announced that the Leafs will officially retire the numbers of 16 players. Prior to Saturday night only two players had their numbers retired: Ace Bailey and Bill Barilko.
Those 16 players whose numbers were retired are: Turk Broda (1), Hap Day (4), King Clancy (7), Tim Horton (7), Ted Kennedy (9), Charlie Conacher (9), Syl Apps (10), George Armstrong (10), Mats Sundin (13), Dave Keon (14), Wendel Clark (17), Borje Salming (21), Frank Mahovlich (27), Darryl Sittler (27) and Doug Gilmour (93).
Most of the players were in attendance to watch their numbers get retired. An honour they only found out that night was happening. It was an emotional moment for many of them including Darryl Sittler who was visibly emotional when his banner was announced to a standing ovation at the Air Canada Centre.
The retirement of those numbers meant that James van Riemsdyk would no longer be able to wear 21, so his jersey number is now 25.
When the puck dropped the Leafs got onto the board early with Connor Brown hitting the back of the net just 2 minutes into the first period. The leafs would score 3 goals in the 1st including rookie Mitch Marners first NHL goal:
