Family Connections At The NHL Draft

The NHL Draft has come and gone, the two-day 2017 NHL Draft and Fan Fest in Chicago, including the League’s Centennial Fan Arena, attracted a record crowd exceeding 47,500 fans. Hockey fans already know who was selected but do they know the family ties. Here are some points:

Marcus Davidsson (No. 37 overall, BUF): His brother, Jonathan, was selected 170th overall by
the Columbus Blue Jackets in this year’s draft.

Gustav Lindstrom (No. 38 overall, DET): His uncle, Marcus Ragnarsson, was selected 99th
overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1992 NHL Draft and patrolled the blue line for 632 career
NHL games.

Zachary Lauzon (No. 51 overall, PIT): His brother, Jeremy, was selected 52nd overall by the
Boston Bruins in the 2015 NHL Draft and captained the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League in 2016-17.

Jonah Gadjovich (No. 55 overall, VAN): His uncle, Blair MacDonald, recorded 91-100—191 in
219 career NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. His uncle, Tony
MacDonald, is the director of amateur scouting for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ian Mitchell (No. 57 overall, CHI): His uncle, Roy, was selected 188th overall by the Montreal
Canadiens in the 1989 NHL Draft and appeared in three games with the Minnesota North Stars in
1992-93.

Jake Leschyshyn (No. 62 overall, VGK): His father, Curtis, was a member of the Colorado
Avalanche’s Stanley Cup-winning team in 1996 and skated in 1,033 career NHL games with the
Quebec Nordiques, Avalanche, Washington Capitals, Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes,
Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators.

Reilly Walsh (No. 81 overall, NJD): His father, Mike, skated in 14 games with the New York
Islanders from 1987-89.

Daniil Tarasov (No. 86 overall, CBJ): His father, Vadim, was also a goaltender and was
selected 196th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1999 NHL Draft.

Cale Fleury (No. 87 overall, MTL): His brother, Haydn, is a defenseman who was selected
seventh overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2014 NHL Draft and skated for the Charlotte
Checkers of the American Hockey League in 2016-17.

Jack Rathbone (No. 95 overall, VAN): His father, Jason, was selected 121st overall by the New
York Islanders in the 1988 NHL Draft.

Michael Anderson (No. 103 overall, LAK): His brother, Joseph, was selected 73rd overall by
the New Jersey Devils in the 2016 NHL Draft and skated for the University of Minnesota-Duluth in
2016-17.

Matthew Strome (No. 106 overall, PHI): His oldest brother, Ryan, was selected fifth overall by
the New York Islanders in the 2011 NHL Draft and has skated in 258 career NHL games across
four seasons. His brother, Dylan, was drafted third overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2015 and
led the Erie Otters to an OHL championship in 2017.

Alexey Toropchenko (No. 113 overall, STL): His father, Leonid, was drafted 260th overall by
the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1993 NHL Draft and played 14 seasons of professional hockey in
Russia, the AHL and the IHL.

Bryce Misley (No. 116 overall, MIN): His father, Johnny, served as Hockey Canada’s executive
vice president of hockey operations from 2002-10.
