The NHL Expansion Draft is less than a week away and the hot topic today is Ottawa Senators defencemen Dion Phaneuf. It was reported that the Senators asked Phaneuf to waive his no-movement clause in his contract before Monday’s deadline. “It’s part of the business,” Phaneauf said Thursday prior to teeing off at a golf tournament in Toronto. ” We’ve had some discussions and that has obviously been public knowledge, but it’s part of being in this business.”
In 2016 the Senators acquired the vet before the trade deadline, he played 20 games with them that season. 2017 marked the first full season that Phaneuf played for the Senators. He got 21 assists and 9 goals over 21 regular season games.”I enjoy playing in Ottawa. It is a great organization and a great city. I have enjoyed playing in Ottawa.”
The 32-year-old and the Sens just finished a run to the Eastern Conference Finals where he scored a goal and notched 4 assists before being eleminated by the Penguins. ” We had a good run. I really enjoyed playing with the team we had, it was a special group to be a part of.”
He has four years left on his contract at $7 million a season. This is the NHL’s first expansion draft in 17 years.
