The Chicago Cubs, who won the N.L. Central Division for the second straight season, play game three of the National League Division Series against the Washington Nationals.
Chicago aims to become the first franchise to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees won three-straight World Series titles from 1998-2000.
The Cubs finished the regular season with a 92-70 record … reached 92 regular season victories for the third-straight campaign and for the 19th time in franchise history dating to 1876. They’re the first defending World Series champions to win their division the next season, and reach 90 wins while doing so, since the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies went 93-69 and won the N.L. East by six games. In fact, besides this year’s Cubs and the 2009 Phillies, the only other defending World Champion to win their division the following season in the last 15 years was the 2002 Arizona Diamondbacks, who won the N.L. West by 2.5 games. © Furthermore, the Cubs are the first defending World Champions to even make the playoffs the next season since the 2012 Cardinals secured a Wild Card spot.
The team have snapped a four-year drought in which the defending World Series champion failed to qualify for postseason the following year. This is the third year in a row that they have quliafied for post-season play, the first time that has happened since 1906-08.
