Canada Falls 83-71 To Virgin Islands In AMERICUP 2017 Opener

The Senior Men’s National Team lost 83-71 to the United States Virgin Islands on Sunday evening in their opening game of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017.

Olivier Hanlan led Canada with 10 points while Brady Heslip and Andrew Nicholson each added nine points in the loss. Xavier Rathan-Mayes had a game-high 10 rebounds and six assists in 23 minutes of action.

“We didn’t play well and we have to do a better job of coming out with a lot of energy. We came out sluggish and didn’t execute the way we should have.”Xavier Rathan-Mayes said after the game. “We just have to go back and regroup, come back and win two.”

Canada trailed the Virgin Islands 20-16 after the first quarter and fought back to tie up the game 20-20 midway through the second quarter. Canada struggled from the field shooting just 31.5 percent in the first half and entered halftime trailing 35-30. The game began to slip away for Canada in the third quarter as they were outscored 28-19. Despite flashes of a comeback in the final frame, the deficit proved to be too much for Canada to overcome.

Canada continues group play on August 28 against hosts Argentina at 6:30 PM ET.
