Canada Defeats Mexico 65-39 At FIBA Women’s Americup

The Senior Women’s National Team defeated Mexico 65-39 Tuesday afternoon to remain undefeated at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2017.

Nirra Fields led Canada with 13 points and one rebound, while Miranda Ayim and Jamie Scott each added eight points. Ruth Hamblin also chipped in seven points and three rebounds in Canada’s win.

“Thought we had a real sluggish start to the game on the defensive end. We got lazy and didn’t play our typically Canadian hard-nosed defence. We got back to that in the third quarter to extend our lead.” Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis said,  “It was great to play everyone in this game and see contributions from everyone off the bench and end it on a good note. Now we can go into our day off and get ready for Paraguay in our last pool play game.”

Canada established a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. A back-and-forth second quarter would see Canada fight to hold a 28-20 lead at the half. Canada would pull away in the third with Kia Nurse hitting a buzzer beater to extend the team’s lead to 49-28. From there the defending champions didn’t let up as they cruised to a 26-point margin of victory.

The win was Canada’s fifth straight victory over Mexico in the tournament, a streak that dates back to 1999.
