The good times keep rolling. On Wednesday afternoon the Oilers announced that they signed the 20-year-old center to a $100 Million Dollar contract. “It’s insane to really think about, someone is going to pay me $100 million to do what I would do anyway on a regular day; it’s insane,” McDavid said. “It’s very special, and to do that in Edmonton makes it even better.”
He will have an average annual value of $12.5 million over 8 years, the highest salary cap charge in the league.
“It’s hard to believe right now honestly,” McDavid said. “I think its important to show your commitment to the team and the fans. I want to be here, I want to win here.”
The $12.5 million is down from the $13.25 million that was reported earlier this month. It’s rumoured that he was uncomfortable with the salary cap hit which is why he took less.
“Connor has been unwavering in his commitment to the Oilers for the maximum of eight years. Connor didn’t stray from that. Neither did we,” said GM Peter Chiarelli.
Last season, McDavid led the NHL with 100 points (30 goals, 70 assists). $86 million of the $100 million is signing bonus.
